BOOKS & TYPOGRAPHY

A broadside poster detailing an original typeface, Pewter. Typography, layout, and writing for Cardboard Leisure: A Guide to Modern Board Games. Typography and layout design for H.P. Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Pewter process:
Creating a typeface is a long process full of editing and rehashing. I worked on a couple of letters per week, focusing on letters with similar forms such as curves or angles. By competing the entire uppercase first, I had good context for the tone of my typeface before tackling lowercase and finally punctuation. I wanted to build a typeface that represented a bit of my character, and chose the name Pewter to be reflective of that. The letterforms represent structure with hints of expression peeking through.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth process:
This project is a 92-page book combining the text an H.P. Lovecraft short story with related digital art from various artists. I chose Bodoni as the typeface for this work because I felt it reflects the atmosphere of the story with its stark but decorative serifs. A flowing structure of spreads was developed for the books, cascading between four, five, one, three, and two image spreads, pausing occasionally for a chapter title and accompanying full text spread. The overlapping images on some spreads create interesting hierarchies while keeping the text in line. The pull quotes fit into the 6-column grid in a number of places, adding further variety to the reader's experience.
